Kate Bushby

Professor Bushby studied at Dundee University and Newcastle University, and now holds the position of Action Research Professor of Neuromuscular Genetics at Newcastle University. Along with colleague Professor Volker Straub, she co-ordinates TREAT-NMD, a European Union Network of Excellence for the development of translational research in rare neuromuscular diseases. Professor Bushby is Deputy Director of the newly awarded MRC UK centre for translational research in adults and children at the Institute of Neurology and Newcastle. Professor Bushby has a long-standing interest in the molecular genetics of the limb-girdle muscular dystrophies and related disorders. Alongside their basic research programmes in inherited muscle diseases, Professor Bushby’s group is taking an increasing interest in translational research, with programmes spanning the whole spectrum from laboratory based research to clinical trials.
